The most common skin cancers
UV light penetrates our skin and can cause damage to the DNA (the genetic coding that defines how a normal skin cell should behave during its lifecycle) within any of the many different cells type that make up our skin.
Skin cancers occur most commonly in the three cell types that are closest to the surface of the skin and so are most accessible to the more harmful UVB rays. These are the squamous cells (which make up the most superficial layer of our skin), the basal cells (which form the support foundation immediately beneath the squamous cells) and the melanocytes (tan-producing cells which scattered amongst the small layer as the basal cells).
